What a wonderful week we had at beautiful, peaceful, perfect Portholland and the little gem that is 1 Cliff Cottage, perched above the shore and the sound of the waves.
I last stayed at the cottage exactly thirty years ago; our family holidayed there every year when I was a child. I have the happiest memories of our time on the Roseland Peninsula and to now be able to make new, yet equally special memories with my own family was an absolute joy.
With such a wonderful sandy beach and the lure of endless rock pools to enjoy with our four-year-old daughter, we hardly ventured anywhere else all week, other than a glorious (albeit very wet!) cliff walk to Portloe one morning, a quick trip to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and a very enjoyable day at the Lappa Valley railway. Most days were spent happily hunting for blennies and crabs and building sandcastles, while our whippet had the time of his life haring across the sands and feasting on washed-up crab claws.
Both the coastline and Cliff Cottage remain utterly unspoilt. The cottage (unsurprisingly modernised since my last visit!) is extremely clean, comfortable and well-equipped, and of course offers the most perfect location. To be able to enjoy supper and a glass of wine on the little picnic bench overlooking the sea, then later fall asleep to the sound of waves – and walk down to the shoreline in no more than a minute the next morning – was such a treat. The cottage’s simple charm and breathtaking clifftop position make it a very, very special place to stay.
Thank you Danny and Jo – needless to say, we will be back!
